All Perry; mostly from the plastic Men at Arms box with some metals. These are the guys with coats of arms on their surcoats (were they called that in the 15th century?).<br />
<br />
Designs are hand painted for viewing at wargame distances.<br />

So, pretty close to historical.</div><div><br></div><div>Highlights: Count Baldwin (Commanding the Stragglers) mowing down hordes of Turks in multiple impetuous charges.</div><div>Bohemond being destroyed by the Turk Vanguard general. Light box was improvised from a shoebox, white tissue (the stuff you wrap things in) and sheets of white paper. A small desk lamp was setup each side of the light box. I think adding a third lamp above would be a good idea. <br />

(Part One <a href="http://getback-wargamingprojects.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/soldiers-of-god-test-game-part-one.html">here</a>). I documented every move, took lots of photos etc. I left it open in the Blogger app on the iPad. This morning it was all gone - MUST HIT SAVE !!!!<br />
<br />
So in this post I will do a little write up on my thoughts on the rules.<br />
<br />
I found that noting down every detail (as in part one) was a brilliant way to learn the rules. As I was sharing my game on the blog I felt the need to be precise so I checked each action. I think I got just about everything right. Playing Solo isn't the same as having a real opponent but it does let you take your time.<br />
<h3>
The Book</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://theplasticsoldiercompany.co.uk/images/SoG_Cover1%5B1%5D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://theplasticsoldiercompany.co.uk/images/SoG_Cover1%5B1%5D.jpg" height="320" width="206" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
Handy A5 format. Lots of nice pictures and an Index. I couldn't find some things in the Index so not 100%, but it had most things. There is a very brief historical section, the main rules, scenarios, mini campaign, army lists and siege rules. The QRS and army roster are printed at the back just before the Index. I made up my own QRS and rosters on the computer for use during the game.<br />
<br />
The rules are clearly laid out with lots of examples. There is a sample game in which several moves are worked through.<br />

<h3>
The Cards</h3>
<div>
There is a 52 card deck. Each card has an Action and a special event. The cards drive the game.</div>
<h3>
The Rules</h3>
I like card activation systems (I a'int been shot Mum style) but have not enjoyed all of the games with card mechanisms that I have played. This one worked for me. The cards add a good feeling of friction and provide challenging decision making. They don't take over. I have tried games where managing the deck takes over from moving the toys around; this game wasn't like that.<br />
<br />
The special events are fun and relevant; providing surprises even in a Solo game.<br />
<br />
The movement rules are straight forward, as are shooting and combat with no major surprises.<br />
<br />
I really like the Army Morale system. You start with a number derived from the units in your army. This number goes down as your army gets into contact and starts taking losses. Some events can make the number go up (a baggage camp is a good idea as it can potentially increase the Army Morale Value each turn - but don't lose it!). The reason that I like this is that it gives an indication of the health of your army and when it hits zero the game is over, no quibbling, just over and you have lost. Some rules that I play have nothing to indicate the game is over - last man standing; I don't like those. I also get frustrated with rules where a division has a break point (half of its units, broken for example) and the army breaks when a certain number of divisions break. I often feel that one more move would have turned the game around in those systems; especially when up to half of the army may not even be committed. This whole army morale mechanism feels better to me. More chance of one battle fighting a last stand whilst the other flank sweeps to victory.<br />
<br />
The siege rules look workable. I am told sieges can be boring; these don't look boring. This could be because they concentrate on the final assault. I have no city walls or castles in my collection; maybe I will get some soon.<br />
<br />
The scenarios are Large battle, small battle, raid and siege assault. The battles are typical line em up and fight. Raid puts one small army in the centre strip of the width of the table and the other around the short edges. I am going to try this for my first game with an opponent.<br />
<br />
The campaign is a simple ladder system. Starts with raids, culminates in large battles and siege assaults.<br />
<h3>
Army Lists</h3>
<div>
Two army lists in the book - Saracens and Crusaders. There are force limitation for the different scenarios. For example you can't take elite "Al-Halqa" units on a raid. Lots of unit choice and nice extras like holy relics and Naffatun.</div>
<h3>
Other Thought</h3>
I like the period specificity of the rules, more flavour than using generic rules like DBx or Hail Caesar.<br />
<br />
The battle plan system is brilliant. I will be stealing it. You take three cards that define a battle plan, one for each "battle" in the army. These cards drive a default action for each "battle". So you have to make a plan and stick to it. For pre-napoleonic warfare I think that this reflects reality. Once a plan was made the commander effectively lost control and could only influence local situations. The extra cards cover the extraordinary situations (the unit commander that turns a flank and wins the day sort of stuff). But, you are stuck with the plan you select at the beginning of the game.<br />
<br />
I think the system is expandable. A couple of ideas come to mind.<br />
<br />
A brilliant commander could change a battle plan card once during the game, or have a one time use spare card.<br />
<br />
It could be used for Napoleonics and after where new battle plan cards could be couriered to a Corps/Division. Rules for interpretation could take the Corps commander's personality into account and delay the change of order or even lead to it being ignored.<br />
<br />
The rules could be used pretty much unchanged (apart from wording on some of the cards) for any medieval battle. With some suitable treachery cards maybe for Wars of the Roses (I have lots of figures, still looking for a good set of rules).<br />
<h3>
Overall</h3>
<div>
Great set of period specific rules. I really enjoyed my solo game. I have lots of figures for this era and I want a set of goto rules. Hopefully my human opponents will like them and they can become my default set.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Postscript</h3>
</div>
<div>
I did finish the game. The Crusaders destroyed the Saracen right wing in turn 5. But the Saracens killed one of the Crusader commanders on the same turn. In the final reckoning the Saracens were on an army morale of two, the crusaders hit zero. Very close run.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As a further postscript, I have played Crusades using four or five rulesets now over around 8 or 9 games. All of the games have been close but the Saracens have always won.</div>

This is my first solo game with the rules.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I selected two 150 point armies. The Crusaders had:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One 3 stand unit of holy order Knights</div>
<div>
Two 2 stand units of Knights</div>
<div>
Two 3 stand units of crossbows (2 units is not strictly legal but I don't have crusader archers yet)</div>
<div>
Two 4 stand units of men at arms (foot)</div>
<div>
One 2 stand unit of Turcopoles</div>
<div>
3 Commanders</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The rules put these into 3 "battles"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Saracens had:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Four 3 stand units of horse archers</div>
<div>
Two 3 stand units of Ghulums</div>
<div>
Two 4 stand units of Adath (militia spears)</div>
<div>
Two 4 stand units of archers</div>
<div>
One 2 stand unit of Arab Tribal Cavalry</div>
<div>
Two mounted commanders and one on foot</div>
<div>
Again in three "battles"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This was the deployment:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-u2aprXqXT1c/VbgAAuOeTqI/AAAAAAAAA3g/wdLFQuIIYz0/s640/blogger-image-1158331427.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-u2aprXqXT1c/VbgAAuOeTqI/AAAAAAAAA3g/wdLFQuIIYz0/s640/blogger-image-1158331427.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Note the cards, these drive the game.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Three cards are allocated to each side to denote their battle plan. These are allocated one per battle and they stay with that battle for the game.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As I was playing solo I selected the battle plans at random.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Crusaders battle plan was "Double Envelopment". This gave each flank a "Charge" card. The centre received a "March" card.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Saracen battle plan was "Hold and Harry". The flanks each had a "Advance, Loose!, Retire" card, the centre had a "Loose!" card.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As the Saracen plan was less aggressive they had to deploy first.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
After deployment each side was dealt four more cards. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As the more aggressive side the Crusaders went first.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
They drew the following cards:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
War Engine Loose! - useless as no war engines on the table. But each card has a special event. this card has "Inspired Leader" which removes disorder from units.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Manoeuvre- allows more complex movement, special event - Inspired leader ( again)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Skirmishes Move - special event; Local Knowledges - allows a Saracen unit to move through bad terrain more easily ( no good for the Crusaders)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
March - the basic movement card. special event - well drilled, used to remove disorder from better quality troops.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Note the special events on the "battle" cards are not available during the game.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Crusaders chose to use their centre battle's set card, "March" to move all of the units forward. As medium infantry they move 4 inches (paces in the rules, you decide how long as pace is, for 28's one inch is suggested).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yCsExzZ1uAM/Vbf_09EnijI/AAAAAAAAA14/Zt6Bg4bZqco/s640/blogger-image--1398234137.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yCsExzZ1uAM/Vbf_09EnijI/AAAAAAAAA14/Zt6Bg4bZqco/s640/blogger-image--1398234137.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Now the Saracens use a card. They drew:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
March - special event "local knowledge"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Loose! - the shooting card, special event "death to the infidel" which allows a unit of Saracens to re-roll melee dice.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Rally - special event "tribal disloyalty" allowing the crusader to disorder some Arab units</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Loose! - special event "war engine breaks"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Saracens played the March card on the centre battle. They advanced 4 inches, moving one stand width obliquely. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-keTiW7zVdOc/Vbf_19e_MDI/AAAAAAAAA2A/Esxxr2o8Uu4/s640/blogger-image-1383109761.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-keTiW7zVdOc/Vbf_19e_MDI/AAAAAAAAA2A/Esxxr2o8Uu4/s640/blogger-image-1383109761.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Back to the Crusaders. They used the other March card to move the centre battle again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A5fH8Qr_UGQ/Vbf_59xjH_I/AAAAAAAAA2k/frLzSEKtiTU/s640/blogger-image--1543923667.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A5fH8Qr_UGQ/Vbf_59xjH_I/AAAAAAAAA2k/frLzSEKtiTU/s640/blogger-image--1543923667.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The Saracens didn't really have a useful card, the Advance, Loose!, Retire cards on each flank were no use, 6" move and 9" bow range didn't look likely to reach the enemy ( no pre-measuring allowed). So the Saracens traded two cards for one replacement in lieu of a turn. A Loose! and a Rally were traded for a Charge card. This had the special event of "Mercenary Grievance" inconveniences an enemy mercenary unit (horse archers, crossbows and Turcopoles ).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Back to the Infadels. The left battle used its default Charge card to make a full move towards the enemy. This is 5" for heavy cavalry in close order. They could have galloped (allowed once per game) fo 8" but this would cause a point of disorder.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uAPOI4JjkRA/Vbf_7yY3wcI/AAAAAAAAA24/Zo6x4NByFGk/s640/blogger-image--386554989.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uAPOI4JjkRA/Vbf_7yY3wcI/AAAAAAAAA24/Zo6x4NByFGk/s640/blogger-image--386554989.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Saracens. The right hand battle use the charge card that was just drawn. 6" for the close order Ghulums, 12 for the open order skirmishes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SrBur-TT0YM/Vbf_4dJXosI/AAAAAAAAA2Y/nK5c5ThOpcQ/s640/blogger-image--489909759.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SrBur-TT0YM/Vbf_4dJXosI/AAAAAAAAA2Y/nK5c5ThOpcQ/s640/blogger-image--489909759.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Crusaders. Play a Charge card on the right battle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SoL2AJN7nqg/Vbf__unJtmI/AAAAAAAAA3Y/5rwOrLtL9Dk/s640/blogger-image--1335869873.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SoL2AJN7nqg/Vbf__unJtmI/AAAAAAAAA3Y/5rwOrLtL9Dk/s640/blogger-image--1335869873.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Saracens. The left battle play their default Advance, Loose!, Retire card with both units of horse archers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The first unit advances 6" but finds itself out of borage an retreats. The second unit moves up 6" and shoots at the Crusader Turcopoles. As a three stand unit they roll 3D6 needing 3+ to hit, there are no modifiers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GoJNIz7rYE4/Vbf_6m-q7kI/AAAAAAAAA2w/FXAlC4z6MPo/s640/blogger-image--807912357.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GoJNIz7rYE4/Vbf_6m-q7kI/AAAAAAAAA2w/FXAlC4z6MPo/s640/blogger-image--807912357.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
two hits, causes two resolve test on the Turcopoles. The Turcopoles have a resolve of 5+. They fail one testroll and take a point of disorder.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HwYQE5RKn4c/Vbf_3ecM9LI/AAAAAAAAA2Q/uVrFNPDG-Bg/s640/blogger-image--2102287610.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HwYQE5RKn4c/Vbf_3ecM9LI/AAAAAAAAA2Q/uVrFNPDG-Bg/s640/blogger-image--2102287610.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Disorder is bad. If at the end of a turn the unit has more disorder than stands it will break. The figures are removed and army morale takes a hit. Army morale will also go down if disorder equals the number of stands.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Saracen horse archers retreat and the Crusaders take a turn. They use the skirmishes move card to pull the Turcopoles back.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Saracens. No useful cards. This is a problem. The only option is to pass and discard. They give in a Loose! Card. This action would allow them to remove disorder on a unit, but no units have disorder.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Saracens have a single Loose! Card left.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The crusaders play a Manoevre card to advance the centre battle half a move. The card would allow formation changes or a change to open order if they wanted. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This brings the crusader men at arms into range of some Saracen horse archers who use their final card, Loose!. Three dice are rolled, one hit. The crusaders have 5+ resolve, they fail and receive a point of disorder.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dxwOL1diAys/Vbf_5DRRY3I/AAAAAAAAA2g/hwJN4azgeT0/s640/blogger-image--759533441.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dxwOL1diAys/Vbf_5DRRY3I/AAAAAAAAA2g/hwJN4azgeT0/s640/blogger-image--759533441.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
That finishes the Saracens for this "turn". The crusaders have a War Engines Loose! Card.they use the Inspired leader special event to take the disorder off of the men at arms.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
At turn end the action cards are returned to the bottom of the deck. The cards allocated to the battles are retained at the edge of the table. No units have been routed and none have disorder equal to their stands. This means that Army Morale is not affected. Army morale is derived from the forces chosen. For this game the Crusaders have Army Morale of 18, the Saracens have 13.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Turn two.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Crusader cards: March (Allah is great - no use to Christians), Fear - causes an enemy unit to take a resolve test - (Tribal disloyalty), Fear (Deserters - causes resolve test on low quality enemy unit), Loose! (War engine direct hit - enhances war engine shooting).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Saracen cards: Melee - fight (Mercenray grievance resolved), March (Levy panic - put D6 disorder on poor quality enemy unit - ouch), War engine loose! (War engine direct hit) - useless in this game. Melee ( Bold Champion - issue a challenge in Melee with advantage to your champion).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Initiative goes to the side with the highest army morale. So the Crusaders go first. The centre battle plays it's default March card to oblique the crossbows towards the Saracen horse archers. This does not put them in a position to shoot. They can only shoot out to 45degrees, they will need a Manoevre card to get to the right angle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Saracens play their right battle' s ALR ( it is too long to type) card. One unit of horse archers moves into range of some Knights and shoot. Three hits ! The Knights resolve is 4+. They fail one test and take one point of disorder.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hZ5zTP2I22E/Vbf_2pSsZVI/AAAAAAAAA2I/ZrMopjMqbx0/s640/blogger-image-1813532256.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hZ5zTP2I22E/Vbf_2pSsZVI/AAAAAAAAA2I/ZrMopjMqbx0/s640/blogger-image-1813532256.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The horse archers withdraw. The second horse archer unit moves up to shoot at the Templars. One hit. The Templars easily pass their 3+ resolve with a 5.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The crusaders play their right battle's Charge card and advance.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Saracens play a March card on the centre battle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Muslim infantry could be in range. The crusader plays a Loose! Card on the centre battle and measures the range. Just under 10", just in range. Three dice are rolled ... 2, 5, 6, two hits. With a resolve if 6+ (militia) the Saracen infantry take two points of disorder.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--grmpkKKezA/Vbf_8turFgI/AAAAAAAAA3A/a889SrN07FY/s640/blogger-image--1349743835.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--grmpkKKezA/Vbf_8turFgI/AAAAAAAAA3A/a889SrN07FY/s640/blogger-image--1349743835.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Saracens trade a War Engine Loose and a Melee card for a Challenge card, this lets champions fight in a Melee, probably not useful this turn.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The crusaders twist the knife playing their deserters special event on the milita, this breaks the unit's morale and they flee. This means that the armies morale could take a loss. A dice is rolled by the Saracens, a 4. This reduces their army morale by two, to 11.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Saracens use the left battle's ALR card. But they can't get in range of the crusaders.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Crusaders play March on their left battle. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Saracens trade Challenge and Melee for a Manoevre card. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Crusaders play Charge on the Left battle. The Knights don't reach (with a point of disorder they couldn't risk galloping). The Templars hit the horse archers and fight a Melee. The Templars get Shock Impact and immediately cause a point of disorder on the horse archers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Knights get three dice, their lances hit on 2+ (only one chance per game with lances). Two hits, with resolve of 5+ the horse archers take a point of disorder. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
They hit on 5+ with their swords but they lose a dice for being in open order and another for light horse fighting heavies. They miss.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Saracens now play Manoevre in the Centre. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
They have a Loose! card left; this has to be used on the centre battle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The crusaders play Fear on the disordered horse archers and they receive another point of disorder. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The final Saracen Loose! Card allows a unit of archers to shoot at the crossbows. Four dice hitting on 4+ gives 3 hits. With a resolve of 5+ the crossbows receive three points of disorder. This equals their number of stands and as we are at the end of the turn army morale drops by one point to 17.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Horse Archers have disorder equaling their number of stands, the Saracens take one off of their Morale Value; drops to 10.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So at the end of turn two the score is Crusaders 17, Saracens 10.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
More in part two.</div>

<br />
Problem - no figures and no time.<br />
<br />
Answer - Paper.<br />
<br />
So I found some top-down images of every unit at Waterloo on the Junior general site:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.juniorgeneral.org/index.php/figure/figureList/topdowns#87">http://www.juniorgeneral.org/index.php/figure/figureList/topdowns#87</a><br />
<br />
Just look for those labelled as "Battle of Waterloo".<br />
<br />
I printed them all out (25 or so sheets of A4 and a full ink cartridge). Laminated and cut out.<br />
<br />
Here is an idea of what they look like on the table:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W5aS--zCHJc/VYFIeReEmnI/AAAAAAAAA0M/Mjvw33_E4Cs/s1600/IMG_0063.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W5aS--zCHJc/VYFIeReEmnI/AAAAAAAAA0M/Mjvw33_E4Cs/s320/IMG_0063.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Buildings are quick assemblies of those in Miniature Wargames 386. Not that well put together, but throw-away.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next problem is rules. There are hundreds of elements, I want to play this in 2-3 hours with two players, so about 30% of real time. That means really simple quick rules. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have written a one page set that I will try.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Y3kXtWJImhU/VYFJzyTPoYI/AAAAAAAAA0Y/UWuQbX6hC38/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2015-06-17%2Bat%2B11.19.35.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Y3kXtWJImhU/VYFJzyTPoYI/AAAAAAAAA0Y/UWuQbX6hC38/s320/Screen%2BShot%2B2015-06-17%2Bat%2B11.19.35.png" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Will try to do a report on how it goes.Getbackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07104667996040033566noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3036238233886997678.post-86147808411317897182015-01-27T15:09:00.001+00:002015-01-27T15:09:31.955+00:00The rules Cannae take it ... well actually they can.I recently bought a set of rules called "To The Strongest!" by Simon Miller (BigRedBatCave). Myself and my good friend Stuart tried them out.<br />
<br />
I set up a Cannae style battle of Romans and Carthaginians. The thinking being that if a set of rules can "do Cannae" they must be OK.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Gauls and Spanish in the centre</div>
<br />
No points were used, I just laid out two armies that looked about right.<br />
<br />
To the Strongest! uses a grid for movement and weapon ranges. I marked mine out with little green sticky disks bought in W H Smith. My grid was built with six inch squares (rules suggest 150mm but 6" is close and quicker to measure out with my ruler). Units have to fit into the boxes, I went with a unit frontage of 120mm for foot and 100mm for horse. My foot figures are on 40mm Squares so three to a unit. Cavalry on 25X50 so four to a unit. The Roman heavy infantry are in small units so I gave them an 80mm frontage. These frontages are not too important, it is the grid that matters.<br />
<br />
Each unit with a distance weapon has an ammunition supply. I represented this with some coins covered in sand and flock (some with arrows) that I use as casualty markers with other rules. As units shoot they give up ammunition. Once exhausted they cannot shoot. There is a limited resupply available. Units that pass a test can take on more ammo.<br />
<br />
Each army is divided into commands. Activation is per "box" for a command. The command activates units in boxes until it fails or runs out of things to do. Units can do multiple things in a "turn", we had units doing up to four actions. To activate the unit must pass a test. This test is a number that must be exceeded. All tests are performed using the number cards from two standard decks of playing cards. You declare what a unit will do, turn over a card and if you pass the unit takes its action. You can then move onto another unit or re-activate the unit just activated. It becomes increasingly difficult to get units to activate after the first attempt.<br />
<br />
Shooting and combat also use the cards. Target numbers to hit (e.g. 8 for shooting) and then a save. Variability in troop types is mostly built into the save values. There is a lot more to the rules than I have described here of course. I was wary about playing card clutter on the table so I found some tiny cards (about 40X20), these worked well.<br />
<br />
So to our game. I took on the Romans, Stuart had the Carthos.<br />
<br />
The armies got to grips very quickly. Shooting was ineffectual and most units expended their ammunition to no avail. Hand to hand combat was brutal and fast. The Roman small units are very flexible and pretty hard hitting (they demolished two gallic war bands) but they can only take one hit so they died quite rapidly.<br />
<br />
There were protracted cavalry actions on the flanks. Where the medium cavalry clashed the hand to hand fighting went on for a while with lots of rallying and re-joining the fight. Where the Latin cavalry were fighting Numidians there were evades and chases which covered a lot of that quarter length of the table.<br />
<br />
Eventually the Roman cavalry was eliminated and the Latins neutralised. At this point the Carthaginian heavy foot advanced and turned to face each Roman flank. The Romans kept up the pressure in the centre. Both armies were one victory point away from defeat (as units are lost victory tokens are surrendered from an allocation made at the start). The Romans almost burst through the Carthaginian centre but failed their activations (two aces in a row). Then the Punic pincer gripped and the Romans lost a unit. It was all over. The Carthaginian cavalry was poised to trap the Romans ...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B0WYiN_xq8Q/VMenwKXA7rI/AAAAAAAAAk8/4Iroq0VEwhk/s1600/IMG_20150127_135411487.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B0WYiN_xq8Q/VMenwKXA7rI/AAAAAAAAAk8/4Iroq0VEwhk/s1600/IMG_20150127_135411487.jpg" height="179" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
End of the game</div>
<br />
So yes the rules can do Cannae (or something a little bit like it).<br />
<br />
Overall. We liked the grid, made movement simple and removed any arguments about the eligibility of moves. I was sceptical about the cards but they are easy to use and very fast. We had fifty units on the table and played to a conclusion in 2 1/2 hours. The mechanism for Roman line relief is very subtle and worked well. Effectively if the Hastati die the Principes get to strike back for them.<br />
<br />
We will be playing these again. They are faster and less fiddly than Sword and Spear (which we like) so better for big games.<br />
<br />

As I already had some armoured plastic Vikings from them, sitting in the plastic pile, I thought I would make myself a Viking Army. I added some archers from Crusader and got to work.<br />
<br />
The new plastic figures are really easy to put together and I had a box full (40) ready to undercoat pretty quickly. I undercoat in brown enamels so this was done and they were left to dry.<br />
<br />
I then set to painting in batches of 10-12. First a batch of unarmoured, then some armoured and so on; sneaking in the archers as I went.<br />
<br />
I managed to get 1-2 hours of modelling/painting in each day. Now, 13 days after Salute I have a little army. Big enough for Dux Bellorum or Basic Impetus. Total 85 figures.<br />
<br />
I sneaked in 3 metal GB figures that I had already painted and 12 of the plastic Vikings had been painted to double up as Gallowglas in my WotR army. So 70 figures in 13 days.<br />
<br />
Here are some pictures (done on iPhone). Note that I used a couple of heads from the armoured box on the new figures (fit perfectly).<br />

They looked great.<br /><br />Now I usually avoid sprays because I have had disasters with frosted figures. I used the spray because I was in a hurry.<br /><br />Today I sprayed another 13 figures. They frosted! Same can of spray, same shaking, sprayed in same place (outside).<br /><br />Today is more humid - so that must be the issue.<br /><br />I managed to fix the figures. Here's how.<br /><br />First I brushed on some Daler-Rowney Soluble gloss varnish. <br /><br />When the figures were dry I brushed on Windsor and Newton Galleria Matt Varnish<br /><br />Worked brilliantly with no frosting.<br /><br />The picture shows the result.<br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/06/27/769.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/06/27/s_769.jpg' border='0' width='267' height='267' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Now I need to base them up.<br /><br />- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad<br />Getbackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07104667996040033566noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3036238233886997678.post-8561967792932020052012-06-22T09:50:00.001+01:002012-06-22T09:50:54.118+01:00Roman and Punics on ParadeI had the table out for a game last night. I now have mine. It is not strictly speaking mine, I have to share it with the kids, but its pretty close.<br />
<br />
I have a good sized space in my recently converted garage, with a table and plenty of storage.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Table from far end of the room, painting desk in the background. Lots of military history and rules in the book cases.</td></tr>

The table is made up of two 6 foot trestle tables from Amazon. They are very sturdy and a bit wider than I expected at 2 foot six each.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
On the table is a solo game using Black Powder and my 28mm ACW figures. These are a mix of Perry, Sash and Saber, Redoubt, Crusader and just a few Foundry.<br />

The game ended in a draw. Both sides had a brigade break in the same turn. With the stats I use for ACW with Black Powder the games are pretty attritional. Units tend to blaze away at each other trying to do enough damage to make a charge worth-while. (I lower the hand to hand value to 5). <br />
<br />
Next step. Play some real games in the new room.<br />Getbackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07104667996040033566noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3036238233886997678.post-91076764843447765062012-01-03T14:42:00.002+00:002012-01-03T14:42:50.599+00:00WoTR Ready to PaintI have now assembled, based and undercoated all 120 figures for the

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know that there are only 118 figures in the picture, I had two casualties as I set up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have painted a few of the fully armoured nobles already as they need no livery colours.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been researching the livery colours and badges that I am going to get started with. They are as follows:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
<b>Yorkists:</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Edward IV – Blue and Murrey, Sun in
Splendour</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
George, Duke of Clarence – Blue and

Richard Woodville, Earl Rivers –
Green, Trefoil in Yellow</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Sir John Howard, Duke of Norfolk –
Red, Lion Rampant in white</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Sir William Fiennes, Lord Saye and Sele
– Orange and Red – based on shield ! Or White ? Unicorn Head badge ?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Sir William Blount – Blue, Sun Bursts
in Yellow ?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
John Bouchier, Lord Berners – Yellow
and Green, Bouchier knot in white</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Sir Humphrey Bouchier, Lord Cromwell –
Black and Green, Badge ?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<b>Lancastrians:</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick –
Red, Ragged Staff in White</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Sir Henry Holland, Duke of Exeter –
White and Bloody, Wheat Ear in Yellow</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Sir John DeVere, Earl of Oxford –
Orange, Boar (Black)</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Sir John Neville, Lord Montague – Red
and Black, Griffen in Yellow</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
William, Viscount Beaumont – White,
Broom Cods in Green</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Sir Richard Tunstall – Black and
White, Cockerel in ?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
All
of these nobles appear to have been at the battle of Barnet on 14th
April 1471. The information is mainly from "Standards, Badges and Livery
Colours of the Wars of the Roses" by Pat McGill and Jonathan Jones. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
The
first retinue on the painting table will be King Edward's, attired in
Blue and Murrey (purplish-red). I will probably use Lord Berners for
the other Yorkist retinue here as they do otherwise seem to have a lot
of Blue and Murrey.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
For the first Lancastrian retinue I will go with Warwick's, followed by Exeter.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
The
mercenaries are a problem. They were supplied by Burgundy but were
probably Flemish. I could put them in cool Burgundian Blue and White
with a red cross. But, my guess is that they would have had Edward's
livery to make it clear to all who they belonged to on the battlefield.
So I will paint them up in Edward's colours.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Next time I should have some figures painted.</div>Getbackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07104667996040033566noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3036238233886997678.post-45467614101137862322012-01-03T14:41:00.001+00:002012-01-03T14:41:56.127+00:00Wargaming the War's of The RosesIt is all the fault of those Perry twins! I keep on seeing blog
posts, forum entries and magazine articles about their plastic Wars of
the Roses figures and I want them.<br />
<br />
So before buying any I thought that I had better start to understand these "wars".<br />
<br />
<b>Books</b><br />
<br />
So,
what books do I have. Well I hoard books so I already had some. But of
course why read those when I could buy new books. So I bought two books
on the military history of the wars. First John Sadler's <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Red-Rose-White-Roses-1453-1487/dp/1405823607/ref=sr_1_14?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1315993222&sr=1-14" target="_blank">"The Red Rose and the White"</a>. Then Philip Haigh's <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Military-Campaigns-Illustrated-History-Paperbacks/dp/0750914300/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1315993159&sr=1-1" target="_blank">"The Military Campaigns of the Wars of The Roses".</a>
Read them in double time. Both very good, Haigh has the edge in writing
style and detail but Sadler tries to bring in more of the first hand
experiences of the politics and the fighting.<br />
<br />
Then I
pulled out the Terry Wise men at arms book, the WRG Armies of-the middle
ages book, the army lists (WRG, FOG, Impetus). More army and troop type
information. <br />
<br />
So I have enough knowledge to be dangerous, now I need to start building an army.<br />
<br />
<b>What Side and When? </b><br />
<br />
These
are a complex series of wars. People change sides, change alliegency,
they even change their titles as the wars go on. I first leant towards
the Yorkists, after all Edward IV was never defeated in battle and they
wear cool colours (more on that later). But, I don't have an opponent in
mind yet, so best to collect both sides.<br />
<br />
Now the side
changing and treachery comes in to help. Warwick, the arch Yorkist,
changed sides in 1469 and was suddenly a Lancastrian (actually I think
he was always on his own side and changed his allies). So collect both
sides for 1469-71 and you have a larger Yorkist army for the 1455-64
war. Genius!<br />
<br />
Another plus for this particular phase of
the wars is the presence of Burgundian supplied mercenaries on the
Yorkist side. That gives me an excuse to use the Perry Mercenaries box
to add in pikes, crossbows and handguns.<br />
<br />
<b>Figures</b><br />
<br />
As
is usual for me, this has been opportunistic. I went to Colours 2011 at
Newbury and found Dave Thomas selling the Perry Plastics at 15 quid a
box. So I bought two of the WotR infantry boxes and a mercenary box to
get me started.<br />
<br />
Once home I started to assemble them. I
actually enjoy assembling plastic figures and these go together like a
dream. The parts in the two boxes are interchangeable, so you get great
variety.<br />
<br />
After assembling a few figures I sat back and
thought about actually organizing the little chaps. Many troops were
raised as retinues for the various nobles so I decided to work on a
number of these. How many figures? For no real reason I settled on large
retinues (for kings and the main magnates like Warwick) of 24 figures,
standard retinues of 16 and small ones of 8 or 12. <br />
<br />
I
cannot find a definitive view of the relative proportions of bows, bills
and men-at-arms in the books or online so am going for 50% bows and a
3:1 ratio of bills to men-at-arms.<br />
<br />
<b>Basing</b><br />
<br />
It
is going to take me a while to get these painted and it would be good
to get some gaming done early on. That means that I need to be able to
use the figures for skirmish games. So they need to be on individual
bases. Whilst thinking about this I came across <a href="http://www.warbases.co.uk/" target="_blank">Warbases</a>.
They have movement trays that will take figures mounted on UK 1 penny
coins. So I collected all of the 1p coins in the house and started
sticking the figures onto these. I have covered the coins and bases with
PVA and bird cage sand before painting. Once I am ready to move to big
battle systems (I am open minded about rules as long as I can base
things my way) I can pop the figures into suitably decorated movement
trays.<br />
<br />
<b>Next ...</b><br />
<br />
For the next
post I will share my thoughts the retinues that I plan to build, the
colour schemes involved and get started on painting. Pictures will be
posted of my progress.Getbackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07104667996040033566noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3036238233886997678.post-21816085362503101972011-04-27T17:34:00.003+01:002011-04-27T17:40:08.798+01:00Paper Banners for Normans<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K2FqZ-bjMQ4/TbhFwAhCXrI/AAAAAAAAALI/RL0IKhGK0qE/s1600/mk_Norman_Banners.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 193px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K2FqZ-bjMQ4/TbhFwAhCXrI/AAAAAAAAALI/RL0IKhGK0qE/s320/mk_Norman_Banners.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600302827709816498" border="0" /></a>I have been playing about with hand painted banners for my Normans.<br /><br />All of my shields are hand painted as are the cast on banners for my cavalry.<br /><br />I made these as outlines on the PC (using open Office), printed them and then painted with Vallejo paints. I will take some pictures of the figures once the varnish has dried and I have them based up.<br /><br />Norman army is looking pretty good now. I bought 80 Crusader infantry at salute and these are just about painted. Figures are being painted and books avidly read.<br /><br />One thing that I want to get right is the modelling of the Austrian army of 1809 for Black Powder (the chosen rule set). So here is some of my thinking.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Command</span><br />Austrian commanders seem to have a major trait of avoidance of risk. They will obey their orders, even when the orders are daft. This is because obeying orders, and failing exposed them to less personal risk then disobeying and succeeding.<br /><br />Austrian commanders were unused to handling large bodies of troops. The corps system was totally new and there had been effectively no peacetime manoeuvres with formations of Divisional or Corps size prior to the Austrian invasion of Bavaria on April 10th. So bodies of troops moved slowly and commanders could not coordinate attacks by formations larger than regiments. Whilst the Austrians threw in individual cavalry regiments the French were handling them in coordinated divisions.<br /><br />For Black Powder most Austrian commanders will rate as 6 or 7. Some (Hohenzollern, Lichtenstein, Nordmann) will get an 8, Karl and Radetzky get 9's. I am working on a comprehensive list of generals with Black Powder ratings.<br /><br />But low ratings wont simulate the strict adherence to orders or the lack of ability in coordinating larger formations. To cover this I will use the Low Decisiveness and Low Independence rules from Page 95 of the rule book. These rules will apply to any 6 or 7 rated Austrian commanders. I will assume that the 8's and 9's are above this sort of behaviour.<br /><br />Low Decisiveness means that the commander has to re-roll any triple moves (unlikely with a 6/7 but will happen) and abide by the re-roll. I am using this to reflect poor handling of large bodies of troops. I thought of applying a -1 dice penalty for brigade orders to more than two units, but felt that this might be too harsh. The Low decisiveness option should effectively eliminate triple moves for these commanders, which I hope will have the desired effect.<br /><br />Low Independence means that if the commander issues his orders before the C-in-C he will suffer a minus one dice penalty. If he blunders he will take two blunder tests and choose which to take. If the C-in-C has this rating he drops one command level. I like the effect of this rule in modelling a strict adherence to hierarchy and orders. It will also have a nice side-effect. If the C-in-C is Karl and he blunders and the orders phase ends prior to subordinates giving orders, then it will simulate Karl having an epileptic fit.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Troops</span><br />Austrian Line infantry units appear to be fairly ordinary. They are brave, they try hard and they are a bit out of date. So I am rating them as bog-standard. They have the form square rule (probably Battalion Mass really). They cannot form up as skirmishers; I don't believe that they formed whole line battalions into skirmish formation. I am not allowing them to form "mixed" formation. If I allow French line and leger units to do this it will differentiate them in combat.<br /><br />Some Austrian line units will be large. This will depend upon the unit and the order of battle. As I develop scenarios I will include large units as appropriate.<br /><br />Austrian Grenadiers were Elite troops. I am going to give them "Elite" with the ability to negate disorder on a 4+, and "Reliable" which gives them a +1 when they are given an order.<br /><br />Austrian Jagers were pretty good although I think rather poorly trained. I am making them Skirmishers (they will only fight as skirmishers). I am giving them "Sharpshooter" (re-roll one shooting dice) to reflect the rifles with which a proportion were armed. I am not, however, going to give them the range benefit of rifles.<br /><br />Grenz were not what they had been in the Seven Years War. I may need to experiment with them a little. They need to be headstrong and a little fragile. The "Freshly-Raised" rule may reflect this. This rule requires the unit to test the first time it shoots or engages in hand-to-hand combat, with unpredictable results. Initially I will use this rule. I will allow the Grenz to form as skirmishers. I am going to make them Marauders (no negative effects for being distant from a commander) to reflect their independent nature.<br /><br />The various volunteer units seem to be a mixed bunch. Freshly raised seems like a good option. Some will be treated as skirmish only units.<br /><br />Landwehr: Most of them ran away before the battles, so not too many about. I am planning to be harsh with them. They will get "Unreliable" (No move on equal command roll) and "Wavering" (break test on taking a casualty). I could have used "Untested" instead but that works on randomising their Stamina (ability to absorb casualties) which could create a really good unit, and we don't want that to happen.<br /><br />The Cavalry were pretty good when handled as squadrons and regiments. The problems came when they tried to operate in larger formations. I am going to treat all of the Austrian cavalry as standard Napoleonic troops as laid out on page 127 of the rule book. Light cavalry regiments could be large, so I will field them as such when required.<br /><br />Cuirassiers only wore breastplates, not back-plates. Some accounts say that this was a disadvantage when facing French Cuirassiers. I am going to ignore this for now.<br /><br />Position and field batteries are fairly standard. I will allocate a proportion of lighter guns to reflect the use of 3 pounders.<br /><br />The cavalry artillery is a problem. They are sort of half way between foot artillery and horse artillery. I plan to give them horse artillery movement without the ability to limber, move and unlimber with a single order.<br /><br />This covers commanders and the common troop types. I am starting to work on some scenarios and the best ways to play the battles as solo games. I will post what I come up with here.Getbackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07104667996040033566noreply@blogger.com5
